Proceed with caution and at your own risk. Always follow the specific instructions for your exact router model and hardware version!

Phase 1: Preparation (The Most Crucial Step!)

  1. Check Compatibility: This is step one, two, and three. Not all routers are supported. Go to the OpenWrt Table of Hardware and search for your exact router model. Pay close attention to the version number (e.g., v1, v2, v3.1), as they are often completely different internally.

    • Find Your Device: Once you find your router, click on its name to go to its specific Device Page. This page is your bible. It contains the specific installation instructions, warnings, and links to the correct firmware files.

  2. Download the Correct Firmware: Head to the OpenWrt Firmware Selector. Enter your router model. You will likely see two important types of files:

    • Factory Image: This file is used when you are upgrading from your router's original stock firmware to OpenWrt for the first time. It's usually named something like ...factory.bin.

    • Sysupgrade Image: This is used for upgrading an existing OpenWrt installation to a newer version. Don't use this for the initial install!

Phase 2: The Installation (The General Method)

The most common method is flashing via the stock firmware's web interface.

  1. Connect via Ethernet: Connect your computer directly to one of the router's LAN ports with an Ethernet cable. Do not attempt to flash over Wi-Fi.

  2. Access Stock Firmware UI: Open your web browser and navigate to your router's admin page (usually http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1).

  3. Find the Firmware Upgrade Page: Look for a section in the settings called "Administration," "Firmware Upgrade," or "System Tools."

  4. Upload the OpenWrt "Factory" File: Select the .bin factory image file you downloaded in the preparation phase.

  5. Start the Flash and Be Patient: Begin the upgrade process. The router's lights will blink, and it will eventually reboot. DO NOT UNPLUG THE POWER OR INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS. This can take several minutes. Be patient!

Phase 3: First Boot & Configuration

  1. Access OpenWrt: After the router reboots, its IP address will likely change to OpenWrt's default: $192.168.1.1$. You may need to renew your computer's IP address to connect.

  2. Log In: Navigate to $192.168.1.1$ in your browser. You'll be greeted by the LuCI web interface. The default username is root with no password.

  3. Set Your Password: The very first thing you should do is set a strong password for the root account.

  4. Configure Your Network: Set up your WAN (Internet) connection and configure your Wi-Fi SSIDs and passwords.
